GATE 2026 Normalisation Process

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering has a process of normalisation to obtain total marks of candidates. Since the exam will be organized in different shifts with different degrees of difficulty, the authorities applied the following formula to calculate the normalized score to be evaluated fairly.

This is done to the papers completed in different sessions so as to normalize the raw scores so that the normalization of marks will be obtained. The process would give an objective score by taking into consideration the various levels of difficulty in taking various shifts of the same paper.

The normalization process takes into account the relative performance of the entire group of test takers of the exam in a given session. The standard deviation and mean of the raw scores of each session are used to compute the normalized scores.

The process is performed by applying a certain formula and the normalized marks are derived based on numerous variables such as the number of the candidates, average performance, and standard deviation of marks of every paper.

GATE Scorecard 2026
